I got interested in the game of golf by watching tournaments on television in the 1960’s. My favorite players were Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, Lee Trevino, Nancy Lopez and many other great golfers. They made the game look easy.
In 1970 I started to play golf. I thought if they made it look easy so could I. I rented a set of golf clubs, bought some balls and with a couple of friends went out on the golf course. I soon discovered it was not as easy as these golfers made it look. Till this day I’m still looking to improve my game and having fun doing it.
In this article I’m going to suggest step by step methods for beginners to start the game of golf and have fun doing it.
Golf for Beginners
First you have to understand golf is a mental and frustrating game . There are many parts of golf to learn it takes time, effort and practice.
Before buying a set of golf clubs, golf shoes, golf balls and other equipment see if golf is the game for you.
Here’s What I Recommend:
- Go to a practice range- with someone you know that plays golf to show you the basics
- Rent golf clubs and buy a bucket of golf balls
- Start with a 7 or 8 iron and get a feeling of hitting the golf ball
- Next golf club is the driver
Repeat this two more times. Each time add another part of the game- pitching and putting.
Rules and Etiquette of Golf
Before going ton the golf course there are some Rules and Etiquette of golf you should know.
- Lowest score on the previous hole tees off first.
- Player furthest from the hole goes first. Including on the green.
- Mark your ball when on the green while others are putting.
- Do not walk in-between a player’s, or your own, ball and the hole on the green.
- Be quiet while others are hitting their shots.

Big Time- The Golf Course
The golf course is a beautiful place to be. Just being there with the natural environment the open spaces make you feel good before you start to play.
Rent your golf clubs at the golf course for a couple of rounds before buying your first set of golf clubs.
Your first investment to start is to buy golf balls, tees and a golf glove. Golf shoes if you want.
Let the Game Begin
If your not playing with friends I recommend informing the other players that your new to the game of golf. Most players will understand and help you along the way. Just like you they were new when they started.
Don’t worry about your score that’s not important. What is important is to get use to hitting the ball on the golf course and not the practice range. You are now considered a golfer.
So you played several rounds of golf. You now have a feel of playing on the golf course. What’s next?
Buying Golf Clubs For Beginners
So you are now ready to buy your first set of golf clubs. When buying your first set of golf clubs, don’t get caught up with your excitement to spend more than you need to.
As you gain more experience and improve your game you can always add more advanced golf clubs. When the time comes you might decide to to get custom-fitted golf clubs by a pro shop.
I recommend buying a complete set of golf clubs within your budget.
